Important Questions You Should Ask:
01:
Do you have any required fees outside of tuition?
While other schools' tuition may look like it is less, a lot of schools will add fees for books, kits, and registration fees. Other schools may also require you to pay for treatments that you receive while in class. At SkinScience, the price of tuition is the only cost and includes EVERYTHING.
02:
Can you tell me about your student kit?
Most schools will provide a student kit. The SkinScience student kit is packed full of products, implements, disposable supplies, and includes your student uniform, and your workbook. The best part of your student kit is that you never have to bring it to school with you! While other schools require you to use product from your student kit while in class, SkinScience provides everything for you in class or while working on clients in the Student Spa. We encourage you to use your student kit outside of school to practice on friends and family. Any practice you can do outside of school is only going to enhance the education that we provide.

03:
What is your student to teacher ratio?
At SkinScience we believe that one-on-one with an instructor is important, especially in a teaching environment that is hands-on. Not only do we have practical working stations for every 2-3 students, we also schedule one instructor for every 12-15 students, ensuring that you get a chance to make sure you are performing treatments correctly.
04:
Can I take a tour of your facility?
On the tour, watch for claims that the school has made in its advertising and ask lots of questions. Is esthetics the main focus, or is skin care in a back room? Make sure the general feel of the school is going to be a good fit for you. You can also ask to talk with current students about their experience or meet staff members on your tour.
05:
How much will I be in the Student Spa vs. actual class time?
Doing appointments on clients in the Student Spa is a valuable part of your education, but shouldn't be the only part of your education. You'll want to be able to explain the how's and why's to your clients, and in order to understand them yourself, you'll need a balance of theory and practical classes. Read about our Basic, Intermediate, and Master programs to see how SkinScience breaks down the curriculum to ensure you get a well-rounded education.
06:
What equipment/machines will I be trained on?
As part of required curriculum that the State of Utah mandates, there are several items that require the use special equipment. A few of these subjects are microdermabrasion, high frequency, and galvanic treatments. Ask to see the equipment; don't hesitate to ask whether or not the machines are working.
07:
What are your completion, licensure, and placement rates?
As a condition to maintain our school's accreditation, we are required to track completion, licensure, and placement rates. For 2008, 97.78% of students who started our program completed; 100% of students who took the state board examinations passed; 83.72% of students who graduated were able to find jobs.*
08:
Is your school accredited?
Being accredited by a nationally recognized body allows schools to participate in US Dept. of Education financial aid programs for those students who qualify. Schools that are accredited have met national standards of educational performance which have been determined by a neutral non-governmental agency. The SkinScience Institute's accreditation is from The National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts & Sciences (NACCAS).
09:
Ask for student references and/or call your potential employers after you graduate to find out where they would recommend you go to school.
The tour guide should be able to give you phone numbers and/or email addresses for current students and graduates of the school. These are often better references than students you meet on the tour. They'll tell you the truth since they won't be answering questions in front of your tour guide.
10:
Do your research.
You can check to see what the State of Utah requires an esthetics school to teach and then ask the school to see a list of their curriculum to see if everything is included. The web address to look up rules relating to the Esthetics profession can be found at www.dopl.utah.gov.
