Is It Hard to Get an Esthetician License in Salt Lake City?

Many would-be estheticians want to know, is it hard to get an esthetician license in Salt Lake City? Getting your esthetician license takes hard work, but once you get it, you will feel proud of your accomplishment and you’ll be excited about starting your career as an esthetician in Utah. At Skin Science Instituteyou can apply to enroll in a program to become a basic esthetician, master esthetician or instructor.

Why Do Estheticians Need Licenses?

All 50 states and the District of Columbia require estheticians to be licensed. Most of the states allow estheticians who hold licenses in other states to practice in their state, provided the requirements are the same or more rigorous.

But, you may wonder, why do estheticians even need licenses? Other professions such as teaching school or cooking in restaurants do not require licenses.

States most frequently require certain professionals to be licensed to protect the health and safety of the public. For instance, not every construction worker needs a license, but every construction company does, and the reason is that states want to be sure that buildings are built correctly and that people are safe inside them.

Estheticians perform many delicate procedures on clients’ skin and they work very close to their eyes. It’s important to have good training in order to perform these services safely.

Moreover, a big part of esthetician school is learning proper hygiene and sterilization procedures. Even if services are performed correctly, if your instruments are not properly sterilized in an autoclave in between clients, you can spread disease from one client to another.

The rules are similar for hairstylists who also need to be licensed. While cutting hair is not inherently dangerous, hair stylists hold cosmetology licenses that allow them to also provide makeup services as well as manicures and pedicures. All states also require licensing for nail techs. Providing makeup, skin care, manicures, pedicures, hair coloring and perming are all services that can result in damage or infection if they are not done correctly.

At Skin Science Institute, our students learn proper sterilization techniques as well as good hygiene practices to protect their clients from illness and infection.

How Do You Get an Esthetician License?

To get an esthetician license, you must pass a state licensing exam. Simply completing your coursework at school and graduating is not enough. Many other professionals who graduate with a degree in their field must also go on to pass an exam in order to practice, including doctors, nurses, lawyers and social workers.

Theoretically, if you could pass the exam without doing the coursework, you could still become licensed. But in practice, most states require a certain number of hours of training in order to work as an esthetician. Some states allow a portion of your education to come from on-the-job training versus classroom study. Check the individual state you want to work in to learn more about its requirements.

Esthetician School Will Challenge You

Have you ever heard the phrase, “If something is worth doing, it’s worth doing right”? When we apply that logic to attending esthetician school, what we mean is that although the program will challenge you and it’s not always easy, it’s definitely worth it.

If just anyone could become an esthetician without putting much effort into it, the achievement would not be as valuable. By way of an example, many people do not hold clergymen who were ordained online through a fee-for-service church in the same esteem as those who are affiliated with more well-known and established religions.

The esthetician program at Skin Science Institute challenges students to learn the concepts they need to grasp to work as estheticians. If you struggled in high school, you may be reluctant to enroll in another academic program for fear it will be too hard for you. However, your experience in high school may be due to factors that are no longer relevant in your life.

How to Succeed in Esthetician School

A respected global institution did a study that found some of the major factors that contribute to students struggling in school are unrelated to the student’s perceived intelligence level. For instance, family stress was a major contributor. If your family situation has improved or you no longer live at home, you may have an easier time in school.

Another predictor of success is the competency of the teachers and the teacher-student ratio. At Skin Science Institute, we have some of the best instructors in the state and our teacher-student ratio is low. Our instructors are warm and supportive, and we are always here to provide extra help and encouragement whenever our students need it. We are on your side, and we want to see you graduate and start successful careers as estheticians.

Other factors affecting student success include their distance from the school and their class attendance rate. It’s likely no surprise to anyone that the more classes a student skips, the harder it is for them to learn the material. Students who live far from campus and do not have access to reliable transportation may inadvertently end up missing more classes than they would like.

We urge students who live far from our esthetician school to consider living on campus. We offer financial assistance to help pay for room and board as well as tuiting. Once you enroll in esthetician school and commit to the program, you want to make sure you do everything you can to give yourself the best chance at success.
